Putting Our Faith First

Priorities are what keep our day going. We have our to-do list that is ever growing and we are constantly making the decision of what to do next. With a Christian-like mindset, we know to put Jesus and our faith first. It's embedded in our mind, but what actually happens in real life?

This is real life. Real life is realizing it's midnight and you still haven't gotten to your time with the Lord and are bargaining sleep over a twenty minute bible study in bed. Real life is having that hour long debate over which picture is Instagram worthy. And real life is just checking off that to-do list just so you can fall asleep with the comfort of knowing you "did it".

Tonight, I asked myself this question: How am I putting my faith first?

And honestly, my answer was discouraging. Because it's finals week and the studying and the school work as taken over the studying of the bible. The talking about Jesus and my testimony with friends has lately been gossip and meaningless drama. Even just writing a blog post has become a chore and something I need to do.

"Set your minds on things above, not earthly things." - Colossians 3:2

My focus has been all wrong.

My life has been crazy and hectic. My heart has been messy and cluttered. And my sights have been set on all the wrong things. Just getting things done and just getting through the day. Living my way, not Christ's way.

With the #WordBeforeWorld challenge, it is completely based on setting our minds on the things above (the Word) and not setting our minds on earthly things (distractions such as social media).

Social media is one of the best examples of my life of how I put it before Christ. I check my phone way to often throughout the day, and I know I'm not the only one. Ask yourself if you've spent more time with God combined this week or your phone. Knowing Jesus is more important than knowing what happened overnight on Instagram or Facebook.

Robert Murray M'Cheyne once said, "For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ."

Tonight, I'm going to turn my focus away from myself and my life and turn them to Christ. And as I turn my mind from the messes inside and around me to the face of Jesus, something shifts. I remember His love and how He covers me, even when I'm a mess. I remember He is a God who is not afraid of our messes, but instead, enters right into the middle of them.

Instead of focusing on ourselves today- on what we've done or left undone, on how we ache or how we wish things were different- let's turn our eyes, over and over again, toward the One who knows and loves us best.
